Why Suspension Repair and Maintenance Is Important

Servicing Your Mountain Bicycle’s Suspension System

Mountain bicycles or MTB are complex machines that need regular care and maintenance to operate properly. One of the essential parts is the suspension system. It is part of the bicycle that allows you to handle the drops, shocks and jumps while you shred the trails.

This system consists of many parts that even with its robustness, needs to be given some attention to ensure optimal performance for a good riding experience. So regular check-ups and servicing is recommended.

What is a Suspension System?

There are 2 basic suspension systems on an MTB. On a hardtail bike, you only have the front fork while on a full suspension or full-sus bike, you have the front fork and rear shock. Regardless of which type you are riding, both have multiple sets of mechanical components working together to function properly.

Why is the Suspension System so Important?

A suspension system on a mountain bike allows you to have traction control over the trails that you ride on. It is designed to take the shocks and drops while helping to keep your bike’s wheels in contact with the ground. Thus, allowing for a better ride experience.

No matter how demanding the trails or how rough the terrain is, ensuring your suspension system is in good working condition is critical. A good suspension that is functioning well allows you to tackle many of the trails with ease. It can also be a difference between crashing on a slope or safely landing on a drop.

To keep your bike’s suspension system functioning reliably well, regular maintenance is essential.

What Kind of Repairs and Maintenance are Necessary?

All MTB suspensions (front and rear) need to be serviced whether you ride your bike regularly or rarely. The number of regular maintenance schedules for them is dependent on each manufacturer’s recommendation. Some manufacturers recommend to send for maintenance after a specific total number of riding hours or annually. While a few recommend to replacing certain components like seals or wipers.

Whatever the brands, below is a table for our recommended timely bike suspension check-up:

Suspension System            Recommended Maintenance Schedule

·       Front Fork                 Every 100-120 hours or annually, whichever comes first

·       Rear Shocks              Every 50 hours (includes oil seals and wipers)

·       Full Check-up            Annually

    Immediately (After a crash)
